Enlarged heart (cardiomegaly) is not a disease but a sign of an underlying problem. It can have many causes, including:
Obesity
High blood pressure
Heart valve disorders
Weakness of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy)
Severe anemia
Thyroid disorders
Excessive iron in the body (hemochromatosis)
Abnormal protein buildup in an organ (amyloidosis)

Treatment is directed at the underlying cause of enlarged heart.

Salaam Mohamed - Before any treatment, it is important to find out the reason why the heart is enlarged, & then choose the proper trteatment. Many times the cause is high blood pressure caused by arteriosclerosis with hardening of the arteries. For this, treatment is to lower high blood pressure numbers to a lower, normal range by methods such as loss of excess weight, exercise, diuretics, & other heart strengthening medicine for the heart muscle. Sometimes, a heart valve, such as the aortic valve may be partly blocked or closed off. This might require an operation or replacement of the valve. It all begins with a visit to a heart doctor specialist called a cardiologist.
