my mothers foot has been so swelled up since about last year. today she went to the foot doctor and he said it may be caused by kidney or heart problems.

what does that mean. my mom is over weight and short.(5,3)(230LBS)

what can she do to fix this. shell go to her regualr doctor on the 21st.

but can you inform me if you know that she might have a bigger probelem.

she can not run beacause she also got knee problems and arthritis and diabetes.

she can only walk, but she works a lot on her two feet.

The most common reason for swelling of the feet if dependent edema, ie. edema when the feet r left below the body for long periods, like when sitting for a long time. It does seem to be more common in people who r overweight.

However, it must be said that edema can also be caused by various other causes. In older people, one certainly thinks of heart, kidney, or liver disease, which cause edema by different mechanisms. The good news is that these conditions can be readily evaluated either by blood tests or ultrasound (esp. the heart).

In the meantime, ur mum can try elevating her feet when resting, as well as mobilising as much as possible. Compression stockings (which can be obtained from pharmacies) may also help reduce the swelling.

All the best!

(NB. this is a repeat answer of mine)
