hi jugular venous pressure is how they meassure pressure in your veins. An elevated JVP is a direct sign on venous hypertension or high blood pressure. At 3 cms this is normal, as it can vary between 3 to 4 cms in a healthy person. To measure your JVP you are usually laid at a 45 degree angle, where the jugular filling level can be worked out, docs sometimes use a pen light to work out a tangable angle. hope you can understand all that, sam

JVP is the pressure in your major neck veins. 3cm above the clavicle is just a descriptive measurment. In most normal people they do not have visible jugular veins. Distenstion can be a sign of heart and lung problems. HTN is not a cause of JVD unless you are already experiencing a degree of heart failure.

Jugular venous pressure is the pressure in the jugular vein of the neck. Since the jugular vein is directly in line with the right atrium the jugular venous pressure (JVP) is a measure of right atrial pressure. If it is visible 3 cm above clavicle (collar bone), it is likely to be elevated. But the position of the body in which it is seen is also to be taken into account. If it is in the reclining position, the vertical height above the mid thoracic level has to be taken to get the right atrial pressure. In bedside measurements, the level above the sternal angle is the standard.
