Mainly it is used to look for any abnormalities of the heart & surrounding cavity - structural & functional abnormalities.

In theory, having an energy drink should not affect that, however, it will most likely increase ur heart rate, which could make it a bit more difficult to see structures, if ur heart is beating so fast.

Not to mention, they may decide to do an EKG or a stress test, in which case an energy drink would DEFINITELY affect those.

Best not to have one today if u can avoid it. But call ur doctor is office & ask them to be sure.

A sonogram is essentially an ultrasound of ur heart. also known as an echocardiogram (see http://smart-heart-living.com/echocardiogram.html )

This test gives ur doctor a picture of ur heart (there is an example on the page linked above).

An energy drink should not have any effect. The only thing would be if u r having any other tests done at the same time such as an EKG. The caffeine & sugar in an energy drink will speed up ur heart rate.

DO NOT have ur energy drink! The extra caffeine can ''rev up'' ur heart, & when u r doing any kind of medical test, u want to try to avoid doing anything that may cause the test to give a false reading.

l do not know why it was referred to as a sonogram, usually the word sonogram is only used when u r talking about doing the test on a pregnant woman. Any other time it is an Ultrasound.

They will ask u to remove ur top & lie down on the table. The tech will coat ur chest with special cream that makes the test work better.. the big deal there is IT IS COLD!!!!

Then the tech will place a probe against ur chest. The probe shoots radar waves into ur body & projects the image onto a screen that the tech can see. If u can see the screen, u might see colors on the black & white image. the Ultrasound can follow the blood is path through ur heart, & it projects it on the screen in different colors. You may also be able to hear the sounds, if the tech turns on the speakers. The radar waves capture the sound of the heart working!

The test itself is painless -- it may hurt if the tech can not ''see'' what she needs to see. Then she will press the probe down pretty hard, & they also seem to like to poke u in the ribs a few times, too! And they may ask u to roll on ur side.

Depending on what they r looking for, this will take about half an hour, or maybe a little longer.

l would think caffeine would affect it.

When they do the ultrasound, be sure to look at that monitor. You will see the chambers of your heart, its amazing.

It tests to see how the blood goes through the heart.
