Tetralogy of Fallot is a birth defect, a malformation of the heart. It is treated in infancy or very early childhood. Medicines, oxygen, & other therapies my reduce the symptoms temporarily until surgery can be safely performed, but none r curative. Surgery is the only lasting remedy for this condition. Tetralogy of Fallot requires surgical repair. Propranolol (Inderal) is given in infancy to prevent cyanotic spells, to be taken only as per doctor is prescription.

Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common heart defect in children & surgery is the primary way to correct this heart problem (especially in severe cases).
However, prior to corrective surgery, children with tetralogy of Fallot may be prone to consequential acute hypoxia (tet spells), characterized by sudden cyanosis & syncope. These may be treated with beta-blockers such as propranolol or metoprolol, but acute episodes may require rapid intervention with morphine to reduce ventilatory drive & phenylephrine to increase blood pressure. Oxygen is ineffective in treating hypoxic spells because the underlying problem is lack of blood flow through the lungs & not oxygenation within the lungs. There r also simple procedures such as squatting in the knee-chest position which increases aortic wave reflection, increasing pressure on the left side of the heart, decreasing the right to left shunt thus decreasing the amount of deoxygenated blood entering the systemic circulation.

Good Luck !
