If someone gets an angioplasty done to prevent a heart attack, what are the dangers? Does it damage heart tissue?

Thanks

I've had four of these proceedures. To the best of my knowledge, an Angioplasty is for checking for blocked arteries leading to the heart which can possibly restrict blood flow to the heart muscle.
With all medical proceedures there r risks. The risk of an Angioplasty going wrong & doing damage to the heart is pretty slim. l think 1/1000. or 1/10,000
But people have had heart attacks soon after Angioplasy & during Angioplasty.

So ask yourself if the risk is worth it? l am glad l had mine. l am still standing on my perch.

any invasive procedure or medications have certain risk involved. Your cardiologist should explain all & give u choices. l would assume u have already failed a stress test or had an angiogram to indicate u have some narrowing of the cardiac vessels. Your age, activity status, current overall health condition, etc. would need to be evaluated plus the % of blockages as to what direction u take. In most situations in our geographic region, angioplasty alone is not the leading intervention. Stent placement is usually the intervention of choice if the area of blockage is accessible. Any way, the risk of angioplasty: Infection, bleeding, arrythmia, death, allergic reaction to dye, etc. You can develop bleeding internally at the cath insertion site but this can happen with a basic angiogram and/or stent placement. You also can have a dissection (tear) of the vessel the MD is trying to dialate. This would require immediate bypass surgery to repair. If l had to get any of these done, l would much rather have it done prior to a heart attack where muscle damage is done & in some cases death of the pt cannot be prevented.

Angioplasty is generally a safe procedure. It relieves the block in the blood vessels and improves the blood supply to the heart muscles. Rarely the block can recurr. Occasionally a clot can form in the vessel and occlude. Very very rarely, the vessel can get perforated. But considering the risk of the disease for which it is done, the benefit / risk ratio is high.

l do not think that it causes damage to heart tissue, l think it can save you from having a heart attack or if you have a heart attack it can stop any further damage by opening the vein or artery.. with any procedure there is dangers, but the advantages outweigh the risks.. talk to your cardiologist.

No, it keeps you alive. l have 9 stents from 5 angioplasties. l am happy they have the technology. l would have been dead 30 years ago.

It is better to avail the chance, because a heart attack means complete death of myocardium.
Every procedure has a complication/s/ dangers, but the benefit is kept in mind, OK.
Normally it does not damage the heart tissue.
