I am 16 and l live in Manchester. My mum has been smoking for about 20years, and been having about 30 a day =( In January she suffered a heart attack and was rushed to hospital. They sorted her out but the doctor sat us down and said this was the last chance, he said if you do not stop smoking you will die. This really hit us hard. So for a month or so after she gave up and l was really proud of her, until one day the bathroom stank of cigs. So l went into her room and there was a 20 pack in her draw. l went mental but now she just smokes openly again. l ask her to stop but she hust ignores, l asked her does she not wanna see me and my little sister who is 6 grow up, get married have kids etc. She simply said she does not care =( l really do not know what to do we used to be very close and now we cant stand each other. l know its hard to stop but surely its worth it for you family? Please help what can l do? Thankyou

Smoking is an addiction - It can be very hard to break. If she is smoking 30 a day, for 20 years, it is amazing that she lasted as long as she did. The best thing to do would be to talk to ur family doctor about different groups ond other options to help make quitting as easy as possible for ur mom. If she is said that she does not care. l hate to say it, but there may be no saving her. She may have just given up already. Best of luck to u & ur mom.

^And to the person above me. fighting an addiction by saying u will do something addicting too does not make any sense.

If she does not want to stop smoking, even after a heart attack, sadly there is very little you can do. GPs in England are paid to get smokers to stop, so if you can get her as far as to the GP, then that would be a start. You could use her visits for repeat prescriptions as an opportunity to discuss with the practice nurse. Failing that, steal her cigarettes and bin them. They cost so much she'd have to pay attention.

It seems to me that not being able to fulfill her addiction has made her depressed. On a person who was not depressed, a doctor telling them they would die soon (and never see their children grow up) should be enough to force themselves to stop, or try harder.
She might need to see a councelor to set her priorities straight and get on the road to a smoke free life.

l am really sorry to hear about ur situation. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to get someone to change if they do not decide to do it themselves. That being said though, there is hope that u can help ur mum see that her family is important enough for her to give quitting another try.

She likely feels quite helpless against the power of her addiction which could be leading to depression (and it sounds as though she is seriously depressed).

Are there any counseling services in ur community that might help? Also, has she tried things like hyponosis.

l urge u to not give up on ur mum & to try to see past the depression to the person inside. It is really tough, but u & ur sister need to get her back.

Reach out to the community. There r resources that can help. Maybe the church? Public clinic? Friends or other family? Try not to carry the entire burden by yourself.
