Heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries which supply the myocardium (heart muscle) with blood becomes occluded (blocked) & part of the myocardium dies. The arteries often become occluded due to thrombosis which is most often often associated with atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is associated with a poor diet, high cholesterol, hypertension etc Therefore, health foods r the way to go, because they will reduce the preventable risk factors by reducing weight etc.

l can not quite remember but l think there is two types of heart attacks, one is where you have unhealthy fat which clogs up your arteries - which come from really oily food. Avacado is supposed to have monosaturated fat which removes saturatated fat, thus preventing heart attack - but its still healthy to exercise!

carolyn.L, A heart attack (also called myocardial infarction) is when part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies because it is not receiving oxygen. Oxygen is carried to the heart by the arteries. Most heart attacks r caused by a blockage in these arteries. Usually the blockage is caused by atherosclerosis, which is the build-up of fatty deposits (called plaque) inside the artery. This build-up is like the rubbish that builds up in a drainpipe & slows the flow of water. Heart attacks can also be caused by a blood clot that gets stuck in a narrow part of an artery to the heart. Clots r more likely to form where atherosclerosis has made an artery more narrow. With regard to prevention, this subject is relative to ur risk. However ur lifestyle & eating habits will have a bearing on ur risk factor. In most dietary advice lists u will find lowering of cholesterol in the forefront, however, if u just listen to the 'experts', u would think that cholesterol is an evil substance & that most of us would benefit from lowering our cholesterol as low as possible. But this is not so. Cholesterol is a vitally important substance which is used for building our cell membranes & producing several of our hormones. If our cholesterol level drops too low, we r actually at increased risk for depression & other problems.
