l have been to the doctor a couple times in the last months. But just now, my doctor found a heart murmur. Is it normal to all of the sudden have one . l do have chest pain, and l fatigue. But l mean in general- is it normal or unusual for a 19 year old to have a heart murmur??

Thanks to all that answer! Im really worried.

It could be Mitral Valve Prolapse.

Sounds bad but it is not.

Mitral valve prolapse (also known as ''click murmur syndrome'' & ''Barlow is syndrome'') is the most common heart valve abnormality, affecting five to ten percent of the world population

The vast majority of patients with mitral valve prolapse have an excellent prognosis & need no treatment. For these individuals, routine examinations including echocardiograms every few years may suffice. Mitral regurgitation in patients with mitral valve prolapse can lead to heart failure, heart enlargement, & abnormal rhythms. Therefore, mitral valve prolapse patients with mitral regurgitation r often evaluated annually. Since valve infection, endocarditis, is a rare, but potentially serious complication of mitral valve prolapse, patients with mitral valve prolapse r usually given antibiotics prior to any procedure which can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream. These procedures include routine dental work, minor surgery, & procedures that can traumatize body tissues such as colonoscopy, gynecologic, or urologic examinations.

It could also be a left (or right) bundle branch block. This is where the electrical impulses of the heart do not communicate all the way down to the bottom of the heart, so it causes the heart not to beat properly. It is not serious, & most of the time does not need drugs, but it is usually inherited, which is why symptoms would be noticable at 19.

It is perhaps not the most common scenario for a heart murmur to be detected in a 19-year-old, but then again, once it is detected it probably adds to ur long-term survival prospects: because then u can do something about it, even if it is just avoiding grapefruit juice or stressing ur heart.

Yes, it is normal to either develop one or go a long time without knowing u have one, even at a young age. A lot of times, they go away on their own & from what l know, u can not die from a heart murmur. My mom actually had one for about a year & it just disappeared one day. You definitely need to follow up with ur doctor & keep an eye on it of course. Do not fret about it too much, just take care of yourself! l know it is scary because it is ur heart, but from what l am reading here online, it is not serious. l hope u start feeling better soon!

A heart murmur is an indication of something that is going on with the heart valve or related valves, aortic. Most babies born have heart murmurs due to undeveloped heart valves.
During your lifetime things happen, you gain or lose weight, this could be it, disease, infections, etc, many things.

Best to see your cardiologist, not your doctor, get a complete physical and be safe.
