l just got the result of my Endocrine Test, the problem is my doctor is not available to interpret the result, he is out till next week and im going nuts!

Here is my test result

TestResult Normal Value
TSH4,9640.35-5.50 ulU/ml
FT3 2.19 1.68 - 3.54 pg/ml
FT4 1.210.71 - 1.85 ng/dl

is it possible to get a TSH this high???
Im alarmed because im 35 weeks pregnant and im afraid that it will have an effect on my baby.

do not worry at all. it is quite normal in pregnancy for your TSH levels to be a tad high. it will not effect your baby in any way whatsoever.

Your doctor will probably want the test to be redone if it is that high. When TSH is very high but the rest of the thyroid hormones r within normal range, this is still indicative of hypothyroidism. It is the pituitary gland that regulates most of the glands in the body, the thyroid included. The pituitary is where TSH comes from, & it is working very hard to keep ur thyroid gland up to par. Your doctor will most likely want to prescribe a medication called Synthroid or something similar to help the thyroid gland function normally. In the meantime, l will tell u that several of my patients have normalized the function of their thyroid by taking a supplement called kelp.

l can understand the concern u would have for ur unborn baby. But u can understand the concern that the medical profession has in Australia not to allow patients to obtain access for doctors only results. They r supposed to tell us, here. How u obtained access, l will not guess.

l think that ur TSH result should read __ Result: 4.964
Normal: 0.35 - 5.50
Europeanss do use a comma for the decimal place, whereas we use the full stop; or in mathematical works, an elevated stop.
If this is so, then u r within the normal range. Do u remember ticking the patient form is box where it asks if u r pregnant? Of course. If u had a condition which is almost a thousand times greater than the high of average, u would have been notified immediately. Before u could even have received ur results.

l would, however, complain of shoddy medical practice not only for giving u the results but also for presenting them with such an outrageous inaccuracy.

You do not have to wait for ur doctor to return next week. Ring the endocrinology department of ur local hospital & explain ur concern to a nurse & ask her to check the matter out for you. They can be lovely & caring people, nurses. they need to be, do not they.

l am sure she will soon have some reassuring information to give you.
Best regards & sleep easy.

l would definitely contact your local hospital and ask for a nurse to get the correct results for you. They have access to doctors who can correctly interpret them for you then..

If the TSH levels were as high as you say (and it is not a typo), they should DEFINITELY have contacted you and asked you to see a doctor as soon as possible.. if you have not been told that, then rest easy (but still check with the hospital)
